Mahuli Fort Trek Guide:

Mahuli Fort at 2815 ft, is a popular trekking destination and a paradise for rock climbers because of many nearby pinnacles with interesting names like Vazir, Vishnu, etc., given by the local trekking and climbing fraternity. This mountain complex is actually a group of two or more hills with common cols and pinnacles.






          It is the highest point in the Thane district. The forest surrounding Mahuli has been declared as a sanctuary. Shahaji Maharaj, the father of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, occupied this fortress. The fort has been declared as a protected monument.

          Mahuli Fort is a magnificent mountain terrain situated in the outskirts of Thane District of Maharashtra. The destination is situated at the confluence of two rivers namely, Krishna and Yenna. Located at a height of 2,815 feet, the destination is surrounded by dense forest, which is declared as a natural reserve.





          how to reach: the nearest station from mahuli fort is asangaon, thane district. easy to by train and bus. asangaon is on Mumbai-nashik highway. you can easily reach there by local trains. you can get the asangaon or kasara destinated local train from Mumbai CST. which would also be caught at thane or kalyan junction. if you are an outsider for Mumbai or thane you have to reach at kasara first which connects nashik pune shirdi etc highway which is known as agra road. from kasara you have to catch the local train for any of the destinations like thane, Dadar, Mumbai CST, etc. there will be no issue to miss the asangaon station because each train will halt at asangaon already.  after reaching asangaon station you just have to go 5km inside on to the left is the mahuli village. there is an option to react at there like walk, by rikshaw, by bus, etc.it takes 2-3 hrs by walk depends upon walking speed and season. the rikshaw charges 250-300 rs for nearly 4 persons. there is the cheapest route is by bus. the bus costs 20rs per person.

      time to visit: since the mahuli fort is the best idea for cheaper trekking, the season you are visiting should be a monsoon. better to have a wonderful scenario of nature and enjoyable trek. in the monsoon, it takes 2-2:30 hrs to at the destination.

         History of mahuli fort: The creator of this fort is Mughals. In 1485, this place came under the rule of Nizamshahi dynasty. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nizamshahi, the Mughals tried to end Nizamshahi. In 1635-36, Shahaji moved with Jijabai and Chhatrapati Shivaji to Mahuli. When Khan Jaman attacked the fort, Shahaji asked the Portuguese for help, who refused and Shahaji surrendered.



Chhatrapati Shivaji took this fort from the Mughals on 8 Jan 1658, but lost it in 1661, and later won it back. By the treaty of Purandar of 1665, the Marathas lost these forts again. In Feb 1670,Chhatrapati Shivaji tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed, Manohardas Gaud, was then in charge of the fort. A thousand Marathas were killed. Most of them were from nearby villages. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj said to his dead kadam sardar he was our gold. So he gave the Sonare surname to this family. Manohardas Gaud, soon gave up his position and Alveerdi Beg took over. On 16 June 1670, after two months, Moropant Pingle conquered the forts and Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad became part of Swarajya. Till 1817,Chhatrapati Shivaji's dynasty owned the fort but later on it was controlled by the British Raj.


         the main attraction of location: the mahuli fort is a combination of two forts bhandardara and palasgad. caves at the top and on the way. there are many locations to stay at so that tourists can enjoy the sunset from above. there is so many reviews from the visitors about the magnificent views of mahuli fort.  This tourist destination is the paradise of rock-climbers as there are many pinnacles too in this range as Vazir, Vishnu, etc. Mahuli Fort Mountain complex is a group of hills with many common cols and pinnacles.         Facilities to stay: here comes the most important thing to know. there are no food stalls or accessories shops at the top of the fort so all the stuff and food material you need has to be prepared and carried from home. there are limited water supplying shops, so you have to carry your own water bottles too. for the question of stay, you can stay for 1night camp. usually, people or visitors come here as a one-day return trek. but there are enough facilities for staying at least one night.

       The overall budget of the trek: to reach asangaon from your station ( kasara-asangaon/Mumbai CST-asangaon ) the maximum price per person will be normally around 30rs. rikshaw per person will charge up to 60 per head. 20rs charged by the mahuli fort paryatan, Kendra.
so there will be 150-200 rs per person if you didn't buy your own food.
